Mini Fernspray Gold Hinoki Cypress — Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Fernspray Gold'

The dainty Hinoki cypress — perfect for a miniature garden or landscape. The branches arch out in a whimsical way from the center of the tree, and it looks like a full-sized tree in miniature when the bottom branches are trimmed away to show some of the trunk. One of my favorite Hinokis.

The foliage shifts through the year — emerald green in spring, turning gold in full sun, with an amber blush in cold winters. Keep it in full sun for the best color.

Shear lightly in late winter to keep it bushy and trim back longer branches — skip this and it gets straggly.

At 2", this is the perfect size to start an entirely tiny-scale garden of its own — or to tuck in as a smaller accent layer alongside our 4" trees, adding depth and variety to your design without crowding it.

• Light: Full sun to part sun
• Growth rate: less than 3" per year

• Shape: Upright broad
• Cold hardy Zone 4–8 or -20°F
• Heat zones 8–1

This is a young plant and will need a little extra shelter from weather extremes while it gets established.

General Info:

• Spring/Fall Maintenance: Clean out the dead leaves inside the shrub when you see it. Called 'conifer dieback.'
• While they're young, avoid hot summer afternoon sun
• Let container soil dry out to barely damp in between watering
• Comes in a 2" pot
• An outdoor plant
