This miniature garden tree, the Moonfrost Canada Hemlock, is a favorite mini garden tree for shade or part sun. It can do well in full sun as long as the ground remains evenly damp and cool - in zones 4 through 8. It often mimics a small tree with its small trunk underneath the airy foliage.
This variety is fun - it changes color throughout the year:
Late winter/early spring, the whitish-green needles will get a pink blush on them.
Springtime, the new growth is a creamy white at the tips of the branches (A treat for the eye at the end of a long winter.)
Summer, it turns back to a light gray-green celery color.
Winter, shear it back before the new growth begins so you can appreciate the creamy tips in the springtime.
Trim away the bottom branches to show off the trunk and make it into a "tree"
Growth: less than 1"/yr
Cold hardy to -30F or Zones 4 to 8
Heat Zones 8 - 1
Full or part sun
Pot shown is 4 inches in diameter
