A set of two, very different baby conifers that are sure to delight. Great for miniature gardens, railroad Gardens, pre-bonsai starts, or conifer collectors. The two very different shrubs wear contrasting textures and complementary colors.
As a pair, they are hardy from zones 4 thru 8.
Great in pots or in-ground (but you might want to wait for them to grow up a bit, they are tiny.) Water when the soil is barely damp. Protect them from the hot afternoon sun in the summertime if they are in a container to prevent the soil from drying out too fast and too often.
More Plant Details:
'Cumulus' is a true miniature with a growth rate of less than 1" per year. It has a light, tufted cloud with dense, soft foliage that stays soft in maturity too. The shrub appears to look more gray in the sun, yet greener in the shade; it's the way the sun dances on its leaves.
Shear it back in late winter to keep the globe-shape. If you let it grow naturally without shearing, it will grow into a tall, leggy shrub that is great for a country garden theme.
Topiary Potential: Can be trained into a topiary too! Shear no more than ⅓ of the foliage at time and train it into any shape. It's really easy to maintain the shape too, just trim the foliage each spring and summer. A fun little shrub.
Mini Maintenance: Clean out the conifer dieback whenever you see it. It's the natural exfoliation that happens in spring &/or fall. The tiny shrub holds this dieback inside its branches that can prevent light and air from getting through. Get a pair of gloves on and gently get your fingers inside the branches and slough off any of the dead foliage whenever you see it happening.
- Wonderful blue-green color
- Gets an amber blush to the top in the cold months
- Growth: less than 1" per year
- Cold hardy Zones 4-8, or to -30F
- Heat Zones 8-1 but avoid extremes to be safe
- Sun to part shade, watch the hot summer sun if in a container
- Regular water if in a pot, let dry out to just damp in between
- Comes in a 2" pot
- An outdoor plant
Compact Fernleaf Cypress – Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Filicoides Compacta’
A stunning gem for the miniature garden, shear it in late winter to keep its compact shape or just let it do what it does naturally: let its frond-like branches reach for the sky.
An unusual Hinoki for the miniature garden, fairy garden or railroad garden that can add a completely different texture to the mini landscape. The foliage looks like ferns. It can stand alone as a focal point or trim-away the bottom-most branches (at anytime) to make it look like a tree in miniature, (in this case, keep it sheared to keep the canopy-shape but shear it in late winter.) . A treat to grow.
Prune in late winter to keep it bushy.
