Stone lanterns are a classic feature for the miniature garden bed or bonsai display. Originated in China and introduced to Japan in the 6th century, their presence is enduring, rightfully so.

They first served as votive lights at ancient Shinto shrines, then were later incorporated into Buddhist tea gardens by the 16th century. They symbolize the harmony of man-made objects with nature.

In the Shinto tradition they are believed to attract and house spirits. The light guides the spirits to create a sacred space.
