Mini Tree Set: Intermediate Cypress, Whipcord Cedar & Miniature Juniper

Regular price $24.99

The trees in this set are outdoor trees and come in 2 1/4" pots as shown. They can be planted in full sun to part sun with well-draining soil. Let them dry out to barely damp in between watering sessions if they are grown in a container, to avoid over-watering. Shelter them from that hot, western summer sun in warmer zones if planted in a container.

  • As a group, cold hardy to zones 6 to 8, or to -10F
  • Heat hardy zones 8 to 6
  • Winter Maintenance: Clean out the dead leaves inside the trees when you see it
  • These are young, baby plants that will need shelter from the extremes

  • Full sun to part sun
  • For containers or in-ground
  • All are outdoor plants
  • Come in 2 1/4" pots

**In order as they appear:

Intermediate Sawara Cypress - Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Squarrosa Intermedia'

This Squarrosa Intermediate Cypress is an unexpected treat for the miniature garden. It is a little faster growing but it can be sheared to slow down the growth rate, or, leave it to grow into a miniature bush, and then trim it to keep it in shape.

In the full-sized garden this plant is used for topiary, when the whip-like branches are trimmed annually, it will fill in with compressed, soft foliage. If left alone, it will grow up like shown in the second picture, the tree on the left.

  • Wonderful blue-green color
  • New growth is softer
  • Upright broad shape
  • Growth rate: 6" to 12" per year
  • Can be trimmed annually to slow down the growth rate
  • Cold hardy Zones 4 to 8 or to -30F
  • Heat Zones 8 to 1 but avoid extremes to be safe

Whipcord Western Dwarf Red Cedar - Thuja plicata 'Whipcord'

The unusual foliage on this low, mop-head like plant consists of long, thick, glossy tendrils that suggest independence Day fireworks. Unlike the species, which is a giant forest tree, the many branches seem to explode upward and send sparks cascading in all directions.

Green in summer, the foliage changes to bronze in winter, matching the richly colored wood. Every garden can accommodate the small, dyanamic conifer that demonstrates some deer resistance.

Drooping foliage is glossy green in the summer with a bronze cast in winter. Tolerates shade and drought.

  • Globe shaped
  • Growth rate: 3" to 6" per year
  • Hardy zones 6 to 8, or -10F
  • Heat hardy zones 8 to 6
  • Full sun to part shade

Miniature Juniper - Juniperus communis 'Miniature'

A perfect anchor point for the miniature garden. More durable, adaptable and dense than the popular 'Compressa', this improved selection sports the same compact, blue-green foliage and upright habit. It differs, though, in its broader pyramidal shape and its better tolerance to wind, cold and reflected sun.

  • Vertical accent that is well suited for containers
  • Great color!
  • Upright cone shape
  • Growth rate is 2" to 4" per year
  • Cold hardy zones 2 to 6, or hardy to -40F
  • Heat hardy zones 6 to 1
  • Full sun
  • Prefers well-drained soil
