The Ellwood Lawson Cypress can be grown indoors or outdoors.
This tree is especially valuable to a miniature gardener, because it's one of the few trees that mimic a full-sized garden tree AND it can be grown indoors.
The Ellwood wears a dusty blue-gray color that pairs well with anything purple, silver, chartreuse or variegated.
Ellwood is perfect for containers, just make sure the container is at least 8" deep to start, and it will need repotting to a deeper pot in 2 to 3 years.
It does well in-ground as an informal hedge in miniature too.
Slow growing. Bright light indoors or part sun outdoors. Evenly damp soil. Water when the soil is barely damp. Don't let the soil dry out completely.
- Bright indirect light
- Regular water, damp soil to the touch
- Less water in winter, more in the summer
- Shear in spring if needed to make it stay bushy
- Comes in a 4” pot
Outdoors:
Growing the Ellwood outdoors follows the golden garden rule of putting "the right plant in the right place."
- Cool (eastern) sun to bright part shade
- Zone 5 - 9, hardy to -20 F
- Heat zones 9 - 5
- Regular water
- Well draining soil
- If in a pot, let dry out to barely damp in between to avoid over watering
- Shelter the pot from the extreme hot sun in late afternoon in the summer
