MINIATURE GARDEN NEWSLETTER
Spring ‘07 ~~ By Janit, Head M.G.
|
Hello Fellow Miniature Gardeners,
For those of you still in winter – Think Spring!
For those enjoying spring already – Happy Spring!
"I
hope all of you had a safe and warm winter. The weather has been nutty
out there, to say the least. On my walk this morning, not only did I
see that the summer irises are blooming, but the lavender is too -
isn't it April? It makes me wonder if there will be any flowers this
summer. You may want to sow a second crop of those flowering annuals so
there's something to see in July & August - but wait, it's still
only April! I'm as confused as the spring is...
"Some
of you have noticed that I missed a mailing last season – and
that, I did! But, I’m back now and have much to tell: I have
classes line up for the local miniature gardeners – and some show
dates too. For the online M.G.s, I have new products in my new online
store – if you haven’t been there yet. And, I’ve
revamped my website to make it easier to get around and for me to
update. I’ve also been certified… by the USDA - and there
are some changes in my inventory. (Yea, I know what you were thinkin'!)
And, the long-awaited Mini-Patio Mix is on its way! Really! Read on for
more details."
Happy Miniature Gardening!

Can you access my store?
I apologize for those who have had trouble accessing my
online store. I have looked into it with my host (godaddy.com) and,
because there are so many variables involved, the finger is always
pointed elsewhere. Don’t ya just love it?
One of the theories is that the store doesn’t work
with older computers. If this is you, please don’t hesitate to
call or email me – we can work out your order out either
way.
Tip: When
shopping in my store, note that the cart ‘times out’ after
twenty minutes to protect your personal information. (I know, I know,
it doesn’t give us Miniature Gardeners time to think and it
doesn’t let you refer to the library pages while shopping,
either!) If you do your thinking and figuring beforehand, it’ll
save some frustration and make for a more enjoyable shopping experience
in the end.
Any feedback on this problem would be appreciated. If
you are having problems, let me know what kind of computer you’re
on, which browser version your using and what the error was.
Godaddy tries to “recreate” the error in order to find the
problem and, surprisingly enough, they say they can't trace the problems
on their end....?

I’M CERTIFIED!
(This is about inventory changes - not Janit's mental state)
The USDA has certified me as a "non-host" Nursery. This means that
I can't carry any plant material that can host the sudden oak
death
syndrome. And what this really means to you, is that I can't carry
or sell any
of the Pieris japonica (Andromedas), any mini azaleas or
mini rhododendrons. This re-enforces the saying: "The time to buy a nice
plant is when you see it." |

MINI-PATIO MIX
I know some of you have been eager for
the release of our Miniature Patio Mix and I am just as eager to share
it with you. If I had eight-day weeks and didn't have to sleep every night, it would be done!
Please check back in the coming weeks - we're just refining the
details and packaging.
THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE!

Hey, if you haven't already...
Get your fork out and do some mini-gardening!
Those of you in the warmer regions may have already done this, so bear with me -
there are miniature gardeners that still have snow on the ground!
Spring chores:
- Get rid of the winter weeds now, before they go to seed. Make sure to
get the root by putting your fork down into the soil, right beside the
weed and loosen the root while you lift it out.
- And, while you're there, loosen up the top layer of soil - it can get
a bit crusty when it sits for a season. Churn up the top layer, so the
water can penetrate the soil throughout the pot, rather than have it
flow down the sides.
- Now is also a good time to get rid of the dead stems and branches
too. Use sharp scissors to prune any dead limbs and make a clean cut -
and rub a little soil on the wound to seal it.
- If your 'bedding plants' look tired, think of trying something new
that you haven't tried before. Just remember to match the water and
light requirements with the other plants in your miniature garden.
- Sure beats spring clean-up in a regular sized garden, eh?

MAILING LIST UPDATE
MAILING LIST UPDATE
MAILING LIST UPDATE
Our mailing list has grown
exponentially these past few months and we Miniature Gardeners are
everywhere! I'm delighted to have M.G.s from as far away as Australia, Germany and South Africa,
on my mailing list. I’ve also expanded in another way too. Not
only do I have miniaturists, gardeners and conifer collectors on my
mailing list but… welcome all garden
railroaders, fairy gardeners, terrarium, trough and moss gardeners,
dish and windowsill gardeners, bonsai & gesneriad enthusiasts… whew! And I’ve probably missed some. What do you think of my new slogan: “Miniature Gardening, it’s bigger than you think!”
The downside is that
I’m putting my newsletter online, now and I’ll be keeping
my snail-mails to a postcard to two throughout the year. The upside is
that I can produce the newsletter faster - and a bit more frequently
– and hopefully do a better job at keeping in touch with all
y’all. I’m still a one-woman show and sometimes things tend
to take a bit of time coming together. But, I thank you all for your patience and hope to reward you with new ideas, products and plants!
P.S.
- Gesneriads are a particular family of flowering plants, and
there are miniature plants within this family. Miniature African
Violets is just one example. Go ahead and Google it - it's a whole
other world!

To quote the CEO of Starbucks,
Jim Donald:
“I’m just trying to keep it small
as we grow.”
He must be talking about
miniature gardening!!
See? We're everywhere! ;-)
