DWARF CANADA HEMLOCK / EASTERN HEMLOCK
TSUGA CANADENSIS
The Canada Hemlock, also
know as the Eastern Hemlock, is a great plant for miniature shade
gardens. These wonderful conifers come in a couple of different shapes
and sizes and add elegance and grace to any setting. They are easy to
grow in bright shade or part shade and prefer moist but well-drained
soil - they dislike dry conditions but can be happy in sun where the
soil is moist and the tree is protected from harsh winds. An ideal
plant for the coastal regions. Most of the varieties listed here don't
need pruning - they grow that slow. The variety, "Moonfrost", is the
one exception as it likes to be sheared to enhance the color changes
throughout the year.

Abbott's Pygmy Dwarf Canada Hemlock - Tsuga canadensis 'Abbott's Pygmy'
The
'Abbott's Pygmy' variety is quite possibly the smallest hemlock
cultivar available and one of the smallest conifers too. This miniature
shrub wears dark green small pointy leaves and the brown buds flush out
in a wonderful light green in the springtime. Abbott's Pygmy is a
tough, hardy little gem that grows in a slightly irregular globe shape.

Cole's Prostrate Canada Hemlock - Tsuga canadensis 'Cole's Prostrate'
This popular and useful dwarf hemlock should prove to be
a favorite among all miniature gardeners. Because of it’s
prostrate growing habit, it can grow over a rock or even tumble down a
rock wall or any slope – and if this is the case, and it can be trained
to grow up a cane when it is young - why not train it to grow it up a miniature arbor? The new branches will
gradually form a pillar of cascading foliage and create a living
arbor for your miniature garden setting. The whitish colored bark
against the soft green foliage creates a nice contrast for a shady
spot too.

Jean Dwarf Canada Hemlock - Tsuga canadensis 'Jean'
The Canada Hemlock 'Jean" is very rare and very slow growing - a
splendid addition to any miniature or railroad garden setting. 'Jean'
has a different look from the other hemlocks listed here as it main
branches grow out and down forming an umbrella shape around the trunk
The smaller branches grow out from the main ones filling in the globe
shape. The effect is enchanting as the mind races to see the range of
scales this wee tree can assume. Jean's tiny needles are a lovely dark
green and the branch-work seen on the top of the shrub is very
interesting. Can be pruned lightly to keep her shape

Jervis Canada Hemlock - Tsuga canadensis ‘Jervis’
Jervis will add character
to your miniature garden scene. The short, dense branches are filled
with a wonderful dark green foliage that grows into an irregular
pyramidal form. Although it is called a dwarf with a growth rate of 3
to 6 inches, we find it grows under 3 inches per year here in the
Northwest. The tiny, tan buds are just darling and are said to be
reminiscent of tiny lights. A nice tree.

Moonfrost Dwarf Canada Hemlock - Tsuga canadensis 'Moonfrost'
This 'Moonfrost' variety is a favorite tree for shade. It often mimics
a small tree with a small trunk raising the foliage off the ground - or
can be pruned that way over time. This variety is fun to have around
because it changes color throughout the year. In the late winter/early
spring, the whitish-green needles will get a pink tinge on them while
the new growth buds out in white. It stays a light grey-green during
the summer, changes to a celery green in the winter. Shear it back in winter before the new growth begins.
