At right, Mops Mugo Pine or Pinus mugo 'Mops' is planted with a Miniature Daisy on the left and Irish Moss on the right for a full-sun (not hot sun) miniature garden.

Dwarf Mugo Pine

MUGO PINE / DWARF SWISS MOUNTAIN PINE /
EUROPEAN MOUNTAIN PINE / PINUS MUGO

The following Pines are a delight to grow and a darling addition to any miniature setting. These tiny shrubs grow in a neat mound and look terrific alone or as a companion plant. The two main differences are the color and length of the needles. The shorter needles, 'Michelle' or 'Paul's Dwarf', can be used in 1/4" or 1/2" scale settings and the longer needled can easily suit 1" scale or more. They can be kept small by snipping the candles (the buds) off in springtime. The Mugo Pines can tolerate cold temperatures easily and they can succeed in most soils. Although they are able to withstand dry conditions, they will need some water during the hot months when in a container setting.

It's fun!

Mitsch's Mini Dwarf Swiss Mountain Pine - Pinus mugo 'Mitsch Mini'

Mitsch Mini is a good choice for both miniature and railway gardens. It could be a huge tree in a very small scaled garden (144th scale, for example) or a regular-sized shrub in a 1" scale garden or larger. The frosted buds poke out of the upward needles in late winter before flushing out the new growth. A very nice selection.

Valley Cushion Mugo Pine - Pinus mugo ‘Valley Cushion’

The Valley Cushion Mugo Pine will eventually grow wider than tall but at a growth rate of 2" per year - it'll take some time to get there! The tightly packed needles circle perfectly around the wee branches creating a tight, dense mound. The Valley Cushion, like our other Mugos, is an excellent choice for colder areas as its medium green color stays constant year round. A new addition to the Two Green Thumbs inventory.

White Bud Mugo Pine - Pinus mugo 'White Bud’

White Bud is a little different than our other pines mentioned on this page. The new growth almost spurts out of the mound of needles and gives the wee shrub instant character. The needles are a bit longer than most of the others too, but it is a welcome compromise with its lovely, irregular shape. White Bud has a low mounding habit and a dark, rich, green shade that is perfect in any miniature garden setting. The name comes from the waxy-white buds that form in the winter that radiate against the dark green needles.
