At right, Jean's Dilly Dwarf Alberta Spruce or Picea glauca 'Jean's Dilly' has a Golden Sprite Hinoki Cypress to the left and Jean Iseli Hinoki Cypress to its right. The gold-green grass in front is a Miniature Sweet Flag. A part-sun miniature park.

Jean's Dilly Dwarf Spruce

DWARF WHITE SPRUCE / DWARF ALBERTA SPRUCE - PICEA GLAUCA

The most popular miniature of this family of spruces is the Dwarf Alberta Spruce, otherwise known as the Christmas tree. The Picea glauca is grown in a variety of globe and upright cone shapes and can easily fit into either a formal or a casual garden setting. They like the cool, moist climates of more temperate regions. Hot, dry conditions tend to put stress on them, which lowers their immunity to pests and disease. These trees have short dense needles of varying lengths on compact branches and the new growth is a light lime-green color turning to grey-green needles as they mature. Some varieties are more blue than green. They perform wonderfully in well-drained containers, rockeries and railroad gardens. The spruces need shelter from hot or cold drying winds and from the hot, western sun in the summertime.

Elf Dwarf Alberta Spruce - Picea glauca ‘Elf’

Elf is one of the slower growing dwarf spruce at less than one inch per year. It’s a darling, tight globe shape in a lovely emerald green. The tiny, thin needles can suit any scale: as a big tree for 1/4 inch scale or a small shrub for larger 1/20 G scale, garden railway. A very nice tree in limited supply.

Humpty Dumpty Dwarf White Spruce - Picea glauca 'Humpty Dumpty'

This adorable dwarf will grow slowly into an adorable compact tree, as wide as it is tall. Humpty Dumpty is a nice addition to a railroad garden or a miniature garden setting as it is a good companion plant with a taller tree or interesting enough to stand on its own.

Jean's Dwarf Spruce - Picea glauca 'Jean's Dilly'

This is one of our favorite trees that never seems to dissappoint. Pronounced John's Dilly, it is named after it's founder and is a true diminuative form of the dwarf Alberta spruce. It grows in a tight cone and keeps it's shape over time with it dense, new needles twisting out of the end of the branches. Jean's Dilly is a good anchor tree for a miniature garden bed or landscape tree for garden railroads with an added benefit: it can be decorated for Christmas!

Pixie Dust Dwarf Alberta Spruce - Picea glauca 'Pixie Dust'

She's a sweet addition to any miniature garden setting. Pixie Dust has that familiar pyramid shape and can be used for a holiday or Christmas tree in the winter. The tiny needles on upright branches of a rich, dark green can lend itself to most garden styles. If it is warm enough, the summer’s second growth spurt is yellow – a nice surprise when you least expect it.
