At right, the Tansu Dwarf Japanese Cedar or Cryptomeria japonica 'Tansu' is a great tree for a full sun miniature garden.

DWARF JAPANESE CEDARS - CRYPTOMERIA JAPONICA

These tiny gems are a little picky about where its planted but given the right conditions, it will behave perfectly. Provide a well-drained, moist soil in full sun although they can tolerate some shade. In open areas they will need shelter from spring frosts, flash freezes and desiccating winds.

It's fun

Tansu Dwarf Japanese Cedar - Cryptomeria japonica 'Tansu'

The Tansu Dwarf Japanese Cedar is a fun tree to grow because of it's irregular shape. It slowly grows into a broad pyramid shape that tends to lean to one side creating a aged wind-swept look that can lend itself to the tiniest miniature setting or an Asian garden setting. The foliage is a beautiful light to medium green that turns bronze in the winter. An attractive little tree that won't dissapoint even the most discerning miniaturist.

Tensan Dwarf Japanese Cedar - Cryptomeria japonica 'Tensan'

This wonderful find is indeed a true miniature - possibly the slowest growing Cryptomeria available. With an extremely dense growing habit, it grows about 1 1/2" per year in the Pacific Northwest coastal climate. The 'Tensan' has a lovely, vivid green color in the summertime and bronzes slightly at the tips in the winter. Note that is slightly less hardy than the other dwarf Cryptomerias and is more susceptible to frost damage.

Vilmoriniana Dwarf Japanese Cedar - Cryptomeria japonica 'Vilmoriniana'

This popular dwarf was imported from Japan and introduced to France over a hundred years ago. The Vilmorianana grows in a very dense globe shape of tightly-packed, rigid foliage. In the summertime, it wears a rich, light to medium green that turns to purple-bronze tones in the winter. A good anchor tree for any size of miniature garden.
